Residents of Eeyou Istchee will soon receive a booklet, the Northern Fish Nutrition Guide in their mailboxes.This guide contains different types of helpful information such as:
- The benefits of eating fish
- The different types of fish
- Healthy recipes of fish caught in Eeyou Istchee with the recommended portion size
- Number of fish meals recommended according to the fishing areas
Among the updates, great news about the insect-eating fish in the La Grande complex. The mercury levels for the whitefish, speckled trout and landlocked salmon are now back to normal and these species can be eaten without any restriction. Also, no restriction for the fish caught in the James Bay or the Hudson Bay, meaning that you can eat them as often as you want.
However, since the creation of Eastmain-1 and Opinaca reservoirs, there are new guidelines for these two locations. More details about fish consumption recommendations are found in the guide. All recipes have been revised or modified by two public health nutritionists.
To maintain a good health, the Regional Public Health Department encourages you to eat at least 2 portions of fish per week and be active every day.
