Chisasibi Elder’s Home: A New Home for Elders

On July 12, 2024, a significant milestone was achieved with the signing of a contract between the Cree Board of Health and Social Services of James Bay (CBHSSJB) and Eeyou Eenou Construction. This marked the beginning of a new phase for the Elder’s Home, with construction activities set to resume at the beginning of August 2024. The project is expected to be completed by the end of fall or the beginning of winter 2025.

The Ministry’s budget has ensured the construction of the new facility. It will include 32 rooms, with an additional palliative care room. It will feature two kitchens, one for standard use and another specifically designed for preparing traditional Cree foods. The facility will further enhance its services with an area dedicated to art and craft, as well as a space for cultural activities.

Espresso Hotel: A Comfortable Stay for Cree Patients

The Cree Board of Health and Social Services of James Bay (CBHSSJB) signed a new five-year lease on July 12, 2024, with the lease commencing on August 1, 2024. All the hotel rooms will be rented to provide services for Cree patients.

Several upgrades and enhancements are planned to ensure a safe and comfortable environment for Cree patients. These include enhanced security measures, regular cleaning inspections, Ministry training and equipment for cleaning staff, and a culturally safe environment in collaboration with Espresso Hotel staff.

The facility will offer a range of services and amenities, including a reception and waiting area, security office, 167 double rooms and 20 single rooms (each furnished with a private bathroom),12 junior suites, 5 suites, 1 suite with a conference room, 2 kitchenettes, 1 spiritual space, 2 laundry rooms, office space, and 1 activity room for 20 people, all reserved for beneficiaries.

In addition, a committee composed of CBHSSJB managers and clients will be established. The aim of this committee is to better target the priorities that will meet the needs in terms of services to be provided and renovations to be planned, as well as the sequence in which these should be executed. This is an important initiative that underscores our ongoing commitment to continuous improvement.

These developments reflect a commitment to providing high-quality care and services to the Cree people, ensuring that both the Elder’s Home and Espresso Hotel are well-equipped to meet the needs of their residents and patients.
