Dr. Darlene Kitty featured on SRC TV program Hippocrate

Chisasibi's Dr. Darlene Kitty, President of the Council of Physicians, Pharmacists and Dentists and member of the Board of Directors of the CBHSSJB, was the subject of a TV program that aired on national TV in November 2012. The program makes it clear why Dr. Kitty is a local hero to her patients and colleagues at the Chisasibi Regional Hospital.

The segment, first aired on the French-language CBC TV show Hippocrate, explores the personal and educational path that led Dr. Kitty to return to her homeland to practice medicine among her own people.

The Cree Board of Health and Social Services of James Bay is now happy to offer a translated version of this informative documentary highlighting the admirable work of Dr.Kitty and shedding light on the healthcare challenges people in Eeyou Istchee face.

Darlene Kitty takes a holistic, community health approach to her work. The film follows her and Community Health Representative Rose Iserhoff as they go on local radio to encourage people to adopt a healthy lifestyle. It shows her discussing traditional medicine with a Cree elder in a spirit of mutual respect and openness. 

In the film, Dr. Kitty is shown helping medical student Paul Brisebois understand the profound link between Cree culture and health. Dr. Kitty is working to help medical practitioners understand how to give the best care possible to their First Nations clients. She is also working at the national level to promote recruitment of first nations into the medical field. Her vision is that one day, every Cree community will have a Cree doctor. For this to happen, education is key.
