From October 1-7, 2020 we are celebrating World Breastfeeding Week in Eeyou Istchee. We celebrate during this week as it is the 40th week of the year, symbolizing the start of the “fourth trimester” for new mothers.
The health of Eeyou Istchee is closely linked to the health of our Sacred Mother Earth. Starting at birth we can encourage healthy living in our people through breastfeeding. Not only does breastfeeding supply us with lasting benefits for our babies and ourselves, it helps to protect Mother Earth.
Breast milk is a natural, renewable food that is produced and delivered without pollution, packaging or waste. By encouraging breastfeeding in our communities, we can protect our environment for future generations by reducing our ecological footprint. Not only is breast milk great for our environment, it is also great for our population!
Breastfeeding improves the health, social and economic development of individuals and nations.
It is important to support breastfeeding in our communities. This can be done in a variety of ways such as: encouraging breastfeeding by sharing what you love about it, talking about the benefits of breastfeeding to future parents, providing support and care for the nursing mother and many more. By supporting new parents to breastfeed we can ensure a healthier Eeyou Istchee and a greener environment.
