Living with diabetes is a challenge facing more and more people in Eeyou Istchee.
To help educate about how to live well with diabetes, Public Health has produced an hour-long video, Sweet Blood: Live well with diabetes. This trilingual (Cree, English, French) DVD provides diabetes education in a form that is sensitive to the oral tradition and culture of Eeyou Istchee.
Sweet Blood takes us through the stories of five Cree who are making changes in their lives to manage diabetes. Their journeys show us that everyone has a unique path in reaching a healthy balance and that every step counts.
“Sweet Blood will ensure that a consistent and appropriate message will be given in all the 9 communities.” says Sol Awashish, chronic disease program officer. “As an educational tool, the DVD will be used both in group sessions as well as in individual diabetes education. A person living with diabetes will be asked to view one of the chapters, and then return to the clinic to discuss how this chapter relates to their experience of living with diabetes, and what they learned from the chapter.”
The topics in the DVD include everything from accepting your diagnosis of diabetes, and the denial and shame many people face, to treatment of diabetes through medications, healthy eating and physical activity.
Each topic is given from a personal perspective as a story from one of the key characters, as they share the life lessons they have learned in their journey of living healthy with diabetes.
