BUILDING MORE INCLUSIVE COMMUNITY SPACES WITH THE SENSORY TEEPEE

What started as a new initiative at this year’s Chisasibi Pow Wow is helping shape a more inclusive approach to community events. The Sensory Teepee was created to offer a calm, welcoming space for individuals who may need a break from the noise, crowds, or activity often found at large gatherings. 

Designed for children and adults with or without special needs, the Sensory Teepee provides a supportive environment where visitors can rest, recharge, and regulate before returning to the event when they feel ready. During the Pow Wow, community members had access to sensory tools such as sensory balls, noise-reducing headphones, and comfortable seating. The positive response to the space highlighted the importance of creating environments where everyone can participate comfortably in community celebrations. While many people enjoy the energy of large gatherings, others may benefit from having a quieter place to step away for a few moments. The Sensory Teepee helps make those experiences more accessible and inclusive for all. The project was inspired by the documentary They Are Sacred and brought to life through the collaboration of dedicated professionals and community partners. Special recognition goes to speech-language pathologists Anne-Marie Grondin, Geneviève Thellend, and Valérie Cournoyer; occupational therapist Celine Sit; community organizer Hepzibeth Lee; the Chisasibi Miyupimaatisiiun Centre psychosocial team; and Nellie Bobbish and the Chisasibi Heritage and Cultural Centre team. 

Looking ahead, the goal is to continue offering the Sensory Teepee at events, such a Mamoweedow, the Summer Games, and other community gatherings. By creating spaces that support different needs and experiences, we can help ensure that everyone feels welcome, included, and able to participate in community life.
