When to call 811

Call 811 when you have a non-urgent health issue.

For example:

  • Your child wakes up with a high fever and you are wondering if you should take them to the CMC or hospital

  • You are wondering what to do in order to relieve itching and swelling caused by an insect bite

  • You want to know if you can take both Tylenol and Advil at the same time.

  • You have questions about sexual transmitted infections

  • You have questions about breastfeeding

In the event of a serious problem or emergency, it is important to call the CMC nurse-on-call in your community.

Why should you call 811?

Calling 811 often helps avoid going to the clinic or emergency room. Info-Santé 811 nurses evaluate your health situation and give advice based on your condition. They can answer your questions about your health.

Calling 811 also improves the quality of health services offered in your community. Calling 811 in the middle of the night gives CMC nurses much-needed sleep to better serve you and your family.

What happens when you dial 811?

Your call puts you in contact with a nurse located somewhere in Quebec. You can choose to speak to the nurse in English or French.

The nurse:

  • Listens and asks questions about your situation

  • Collects certain personal information (first and last name, date of birth, postal code, telephone number).

  • Assesses your needs

  • Responds to your needs and informs you about your health issue

  • Refers you to the CMC or hospital, if necessary

Because the nurse is located outside Eeyou Istchee, she may not be aware of specific resources in your community.

How long does the call last?

An Info-Santé 811 call lasts 12 to 16 minutes on average.
