CBHSSJB partners with Cree School Board and Sabtuan Adult Education Services to start Beneficiary Attendant Training Program

The program allows students to develop an understanding on building a helping and culturally relevant relationship with their future clients, by learning how to identify and respond to their needs.  

Content

The CBHSSJB is proud to announce a new training program, in collaboration with the Cree School Board and Sabtuan Adult Education Services, to train local community members as Beneficiary Attendants, also known as Institutional and Home Care Assistance.   

The program was launched on November 15th, and the first group of 13 students from Chisasibi and Waswanipi are expected to graduate with a Diploma of Vocational Studies (DVS), on June 30th, 2022. 

The program is being offered in Chisasibi and Waswanipi to train employees for the new Elder’s home in Chisasibi and Ashukin (Transition home) in Waswanipi.

Students will learn how to:

  • Develop a “helping relationship”​
  • Identify and respond to the needs of Elders and others who require care and support​

  • Provide medical support and care to help Elders and others with their daily activities​

  • Manage risks and keep others safe​

  • Prevent infections and contamination​

  • Deal with different family, social, and cultural contexts​

  • Provide assistance in palliative and end-of-life care​

  • Properly administer medication and first aid​

Similar programs are being planned for other communities to meet their current and future needs for Beneficiary Attendants and other clinical and administrative support roles.
