Information for Researchers

In March 2024, the CBHSSJB adopted a new research framework to guide health and social services research under the auspices of the CBHSSJB (Region 18 of the MSSS).

Under the new framework, the CBHSSJB only approves participatory, community-based research projects.

In addition,

  • Researchers must obtain a Letter of Support from the CBHSSJB Research Office before developing a proposal.

  • Proposals, once received, are subject to a cultural safety review in addition to the three standard reviews: suitability, scientific, ethical. *

  • All members of a research team, including students, must agree to abide by the Miyupimaatisiiun Research Principles.

  • All parties must sign a research agreement before the start of a project.

  • Research teams agree to submit research results for community review prior to publication/presentation.

  • Researchers agree to the joint ownership of intellectual property developed during a project, and the handling and storage of data as per OCAP®.

*When reviewing a project, the Research Office seeks input and advice from specific committees on matters of cultural safety, suitability and approvals.

When to approach the CBHSSJB

The Research Office works directly with collaborators to develop research and data use agreements that reflect an Indigenous approach to gathering, managing and sharing knowledge.

Researchers must contact the Research Office prior to developing a research project:

  • If they work for, or are affiliated with, the CBHSSJB;

  • Plan to recruit participants who are Eeyou-Eenou, whether or not they reside in Eeyou Istchee (MSSS Region 18);

  • Wish to access CBHSSJB facilities, resources or personnel;

  • Wish to access CBHSSJB databases, medical records or other personal and confidential patient information for research purposes.

Researchers should not apply for funding until their project has received a Letter of Support from the CBHSSJB.
