On December 9, 2016, our Chairperson Bella M. Petawabano paid a Christmas visit to the newly opened Glen site hospital complex that includes the Montreal Children's Hospital and Royal Victoria Hospital.
This was an official tour of the new facility, but it was also a chance to visit some of the Cree families at the hospital and wish them well. Bella was accompanied by Board member and James Bay Cree Communications Society radio host Chris Petawabano and Helene Shecapio-Blacksmith (Wiichihiituwin Director interim) and Jennifer Russell from Wiichihiituwin (formerly called CPS), Communications team members Katherine Morrow and Tatiana Philiptchenko (our photographer), and communications staff from the two hospitals that share the facility. The McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) Glen site opened in 2015 and many Eeyou and Eenou people, both children and adults, receive healthcare there. The Cree Health Board group received a guided tour led by Dr. Pekeles and Dr. O'Gorman, two physicians who are well-known in Eeyou Istchee. They saw some of the improvements offered by the almost brand new hospital complex, such as more comfortable arrangements for parents of sick children.
The CBHSSJB and Glenna Matoush were delighted to offer the Glen hospital site, a highly significant painting by renowned indigenous artist Glenna Matoush, who lived for many years in Mistissini. The tour concluded with photos with the on-site Wiichihiituwin Cree interpeters.
