May is Injury Prevention Month

gun safety

Cree Public Health celebrates the Cree tradition of passing-on gun safety knowledge from one generation to another.

Listen to Cree fathers pass on gun safety tips to their sons.

What can be done to prevent injuries from guns?

Safe storage of all guns and ammunition is the most practical way of preventing injuries from guns. When leaving the bush, guns should be unloaded. On arrival back in the village, all guns should be immediately locked up in a gun cabinet with a padlock. Trigger locks can also be useful. Ammunition should be locked up too.

Full Text

Due to the recent construction of new dams and reservoirs, mercury levels in walleye and pike are going up in the Eastmain and Opinaca reservoirs and immediately downstream. We knew this would happen; similar changes were seen when reservoirs were constructed previously.

Why is this important?
Mercury can be harmful to health, especially to the unborn fetus.

What do I do?
• For pike and walleye caught in the Eastmain and Opinaca reservoirs and immediately downstream from them:

    * Pregnant women should avoid them
    * Other persons may eat them occasionally

• Fish that eat other fish (pike, walleye, lake trout) tend to have higher levels of mercury, even in natural lakes and rivers

• Whitefish, cisco, brook trout, sturgeon, and all fish from James Bay are excellent for everyone’s health and are recommended at least twice a week.

The info on this map is still accurate except in 2 areas:

  • the new Eastmain reservoir
  • the mercury levels in whitefish, and all other fish except pike, walleye and lake trout, are back down to natural levels in the Lagrande reservoirs
