| Abstract | Public health department presentation at public hearings for uranium exploration north of Mistissini |
| Full Text | Project background The Matoush property uranium exploration site is just over 200 kilometres northeast of Mistissini on Category III land governed by the James Bay and Northern Quebec Agreement (JBNQA). Strateco Resources Inc. has been conducting above ground exploration activities at the site since 2006. The company now wants to begin underground exploration to confirm the size and grade of the uranium deposit. This will require the construction of a ramp down to a depth of 300 metres, along with two waste rock pads, a water treatment system (including sediment and holding ponds), a fuel tank farm, and a power plant and ventilation system. Review Process The Matoush mining exploration project is required to undergo a social and environmental impact review under the terms of Section 22 of the JBNQA. The Project's environmental assessment officially began in August 2008. The first two rounds of public information hearings were held in Mistissini on May 25 and Chibougamau on May 26. The second round was held on November 23, 2010. |
